So This Has To Get Awkward Eventually, Right?

So is the end of the Kevin Youkilis Era going to be over sooner than later? It has to be.

To put things into perspective, Middlebrooks has one more homer and the same number of RBIs in four games that Youkilis managed in 18 games. Youkilis was hitting just .219 and had struck out 20 times in 72 plate appearances.

I obviously don't expect for Will to hit .380 and keep up this torrid pace, however, I think we all have seen the writing on the wall with Kevin and to anyone who watched Youkilis in the second half of last season when he hit .199 with just four homers in 37 games while dealing with numerous injuries. Given the way he has been injured over the past 2 years at 33 he's obviously on the downside of his career. He is in the final year of a four-year contract and, with Middlebrooks raking, it's unlikely that the Red Sox pick up his $13 million option.

So what do we do with Youk. I'll go under the assumption that Middlebrooks will be decent to good for the rest of the year, are we just going to do the awkward Mike Lowell treatment and just not play him, or is there even a way we can trade him? I don't believe we could get much for him due to his injuries the last couple of years and overall drop in production.

So I bet in typical Red Sox fashion, we just won't play him and start leaking rumors that he's a cancer to the team.
